A’IBOM STATE UNIVERSITY COMMENCES POST-GRADUATE PROGRAMMES.

Postgraduate Programmes at the Akwa Ibom State University is set to commence in full swing following the inauguration of the board for School of Postgraduate Studies by the Vice Chancellor of the instititution, Prof. Eno Ibanga.

The VC, in his remarks at the event which was held at the Senate Chambers of the main campus in Ikot Akpaden, expressed belief that with the inauguration of the board, the institution has “achieved a major milestone which should culminate in repositioning the university to be one of the leading institutions globally.”

Revealing that in line with the directive of the National Universities Commission (NUC), the School has been christened School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Ibanga also divulged that the establishment of the School is in line with Article 9 of the University Statute which makes provision for a “Graduate School to coordinate post-graduate teaching and research in the University.”

He was optimistic that with the programme in place, academic research shall be revived with the aim of driving the vision of ensuring that the University and Akwa Ibom State attain self sufficiency.

Prof. Ibanga implored “members of the board to lay a solid foundation for the take-off of the Programme.”
In his address, the Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Jarlath Umoh, said the programme will amongst other lofty plans “facilitate best practices in postgraduate teaching and learning by offering conducive internationally excellent environment for development of original thinking, creative attitudes, high quality basic and applied research and spirit of innovation through well-structured academic programmes.”

Prof. Umoh added that the board will “design and implement high quality postgraduate programmes and workout strategies for a steady growth of the programmes such that by 2025, postgraduate will form 20% of the total student population and more than 50% of the postgraduate research projects will be published in reputable international journals.”

He added that the board will consider the programmes to be mounted in the first phase and the guidelines and regulations that will guide the programmes.

He commended the Vice-Chancellor and his management team, Senate and Governing Council for success recorded in the establishment of the School.

The board has Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies as Chairman while the University Librarian, Acting Dean, Faculty of Arts; Acting Dean, Faculty of Agriculture; Dean, Faculty of Education; Dean, Faculty of Engineering; Dean, Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences; Dean, Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences; Dean, Faculty of Social and Management Sciences; Director, Academic Planning and All Faculty Postgraduate Coordinators to be appointed by different Faculties, all serve as members of the Board. A member of administrative staff appointed by the Registrar will serve as Secretary.
